Bio | I have been an organizer for progressive politics since 2015. Previously, I worked on lgbt+ policy in Minnesota and supported the passing of the statewide conversion therapy ban. I also worked as a Political Associate for Amy Klobuchar and was one of Minnesota’s Political Leaders of Tomorrow in 2018. In 2018, I began working as the Youth Manager at a family shelter in Minneapolis overseeing our youth programming as well as leading our System’s Change team that lobbied for progressive housing policies at the MN State Capitol. When the pandemic hit in 2020, I transitioned into a Project Manager role with Hennepin County and was responsible for overseeing political education and voter outreach as well as the COVID19 education and protection campaign for people experiencing homelessness in shelters and encampments. I also founded a mutual aid network throughout the Twin Cities for people experiencing poverty and homelessness that redistributed thousands of dollars from the middle and upper class. In 2021, I was offered a job as a Program Management Consultant for a basic income program in Denver, CO specifically for people experiencing homelessness because of my experience with this population and because I wrote my masters thesis on redistributive financial systems. I also joined the Board of Directors for NAAFA, an organization that advocates for equity and resources for fat people. I was named Chair of the Advocacy Committee and have led our legislative and consulting work. Currently, we have bills pending in Massachusetts and New York that would expand the Civil Rights Act to include protections against weight and height discrimination. I also consult with medical schools, professionals, and clinics on how to be more welcoming and equitable to people who are fat or have eating disorders. Because I am from Minneapolis, I’m very passionate about racial and carceral system justice. I am currently the Director of Operations, Programs, and Events for Humanize My Hoodie, a nonprofit that seeks to challenge threat perceptions of Black folks through education, coaching, art, and direct service. In 2022, I joined Gen Z for Change and have led our fundraising and overseen tax regulation compliancy. In the near future we are seeking to get involved in legislative work, which I will be supporting, as well. |
Impact | The impact or role I’m most proud of is my work as founder of the Twin Cities Mutual Aid Fund. In light of the murder of George Floyd and COVID19, people experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Twin Cities were faced with tremendous hardships and it was so fun and rewarding to build relationships with families, get to know their kids, and make sure their needs were met. At Christmas every year, we host a holiday gift event where we raise a bunch of money, collect wishlists from parents and kids in the families, and get them toys and necessities for their holiday season. It is truly the most fun I’ve ever had to walk into the store and buy thousands of dollars worth of toys for 100+ families. Then, we wrap the presents and make them really cute. On December 24, my friends and I drive around and deliver the gifts with hot chocolate and cookies, and it is just so fun. It might not be the largest or most world changing thing I’ve ever been a part of, but it changes my world and I hope it brings some joy to the families, too. |
Mission | I really love policy and organizing work. I would like to continue working as an activist or on policy that I am passionate about. I would eventually like to run for City Council, and maybe a larger office than that some day, but for now I’d like to focus on perfecting my policy and organizing skills. |
