Bio |
I got involved in progressive politics through involvement on campus and doing work in advocacy for under-privileged students in predominantly white neighborhoods. One of my leadership opportunities that I currently hold is serving on the Undergraduate Council under USAC. I serve as a senator on the Undergraduate Council, on which students and faculty help promote interdisciplinary and multicultural studies, pedagogy, new areas of study, and other innovative approaches to improving undergraduate education. I sit in on faculty meetings where decisions directly affecting the student population are finalized. Having the freedom to speak on whether or not I support their decision alongside my committee members is very important to me, and one of my favorite parts of being a UCLA student. As a member of the council, I advocate for any external needs and complaints I receive and hear on campus pertinent to both social and academic life on campus. As a transfer, getting sworn in as a senator on the Undergraduate Council was dynamic, as in the past these seats have not been filled by transfer students. This position is something I encourage prospective students to pursue and be the voice for the students who resonate the most with your identity as a student. For me, this identity would be being a first generation transfer woman of color. Prior to serving as a senator at UCLA, I did similar work at my community college. Some resolutions which were passed during my time as a senator at RCC include the food security act allowing students to have access to food at a food pantry of some sort. Another includes getting disabled- accessible ramps installed at community colleges statewide for the physically disabled. Both these roles have allowed me to gain an understanding of how being directly involved in so many administration decisions which affected students directly and student life on campus can help improve the quality of education for first generation students. |
Impact | Due to the upheaval caused by the leak of the draft which would overturn Roe v. Wade, myself and three peers organized a walkout on our college campus, with the intent to increase participant turnout in all major cities across the nation on May 14th. We implored all student at our campus to attend the protest in Downtown LA and stand up for women’s rights. The article is linked below delineating the work done on our campus encouraging students to protest against women’s rights being taken away, and to increase awareness. The protest featured multiple speakers who emphasized the importance of protecting bodily autonomy and the intersection of class, race and disability in connection with abortion rights. |
Mission | To keep fighting. For women, immigrants, and marginalized communities everywhere. |
