| Bio | Christine Troyano Sacramento, CA | (916) 390-5044 | christine.troyano@gmail.com | linkedin.com/in/christinetroyano How I Got Involved in Progressive Politics My path to progressive politics was forged through a decade of frontline work with society’s most vulnerable populations. Every day spent navigating complex systems for homeless individuals, connecting families to healthcare, and advocating for housing-insecure clients deepened my understanding that policy isn’t abstract—it’s personal. While I was teaching ESL during the COVID-19 pandemic, my passion remained rooted in social services work. The pandemic became a turning point for my political engagement as I watched the broader impacts of inadequate social safety nets on vulnerable communities—not just my former clients, but entire populations left exposed and desperate by systemic failures. This period of reflection, combined with my years of direct service experience, transformed my professional frustration into political engagement. I realized that while I could help individuals navigate broken systems, real change required fixing the systems themselves. What Drives My Progressive Commitment My political awakening centers on a fundamental belief: everyone deserves dignity, safety, and opportunity. This isn’t theoretical—I’ve seen what happens when society fails its most vulnerable members. I’ve also seen what’s possible when we get it right. Through my work, I’ve connected over 900 clients to essential services, but I’ve also seen how many more could be reached with better policies. I’ve helped families access healthcare through Medi-Cal, but I believe in universal healthcare as a human right. I’ve found temporary housing for homeless individuals, but I advocate for comprehensive solutions that address root causes, not just symptoms. My Progressive Values in Action Social Justice & Equity: My decade in social services has been dedicated to dismantling barriers for marginalized communities. I’ve provided culturally sensitive support across diverse populations and consistently advocated for clients facing systemic discrimination. Healthcare as a Human Right: Having navigated healthcare eligibility for hundreds of clients, I’ve witnessed the devastating gaps in our current system. My experience processing Medi-Cal applications reinforces my support for universal healthcare. Housing Justice: My work with the Marin Housing Authority and homeless populations has shown me that housing instability is a policy choice, not an inevitability. I support comprehensive approaches that combine immediate shelter with long-term affordable housing solutions. Reproductive Freedom: I believe bodily autonomy is fundamental to human dignity and economic security—values that align with my commitment to supporting vulnerable populations. LGBTQ+ Rights: My international experience and work with diverse communities has reinforced my belief that everyone deserves to live authentically and without discrimination. Gun Safety: Having worked with individuals affected by violence and trauma, I support evidence-based approaches to reducing gun violence in our communities. Current Political Engagement While my primary political action has been through my professional service, I am a committed voter in all elections and stay informed about local, national, and international political developments. The current political climate, particularly policies that harm vulnerable populations I’ve dedicated my career to serving, has motivated me to seek more direct political involvement. My frustration with the current administration extends beyond just social services policy. I’m deeply troubled by the systematic dismantling of progress we’ve made toward a more inclusive society—the renaming of military ships to erase diverse history, the exclusion of women from military roles, the removal of comprehensive education about our nation’s full history, and the targeting of LGBTQ+ programming at institutions like the Kennedy Center. These actions represent an assault on the values of equity, inclusion, and truth that have driven my career in social services. This broad attack on what some dismiss as “woke” policies—but what I see as basic human dignity and factual education—has catalyzed my interest in transitioning my advocacy skills from direct service to policy and political work. The communities I’ve served throughout my career are the very ones being targeted by these regressive policies. What I Bring to Progressive Politics Frontline Expertise: Over 10 years of direct experience with the populations and systems that progressive policies aim to improve Systems Navigation: Deep knowledge of how government programs actually work (and don’t work) for vulnerable populations Cross-Cultural Communication: International experience and cultural sensitivity essential for coalition building Results-Oriented Approach: Proven track record of connecting people to resources and achieving measurable outcomes Authentic Voice: Real understanding of how policy impacts real people, gained through years of frontline advocacy I’m ready to channel my passion for social justice and my professional expertise into political work that can create systemic change for the communities I’ve served throughout my career. |
| Impact | My Impact My political impact has been indirect but significant—I’ve spent over a decade stabilizing vulnerable communities through direct service while political battles are fought around them. By connecting 900+ individuals to housing, healthcare, and essential services, I’ve helped maintain the social foundation that makes democratic participation possible for marginalized populations. While others debated policy, I was implementing it on the ground, learning exactly where systems fail and what actually works for real people. This experience has given me unique insights into the gaps between policy intention and policy reality. Now I’m ready to move from supporting the infrastructure to actively shaping the policies that govern it. |
| Mission | What I Want to Do This Cycle and Beyond This Cycle (2025-2026): I want to continue my direct service work while simultaneously getting involved in federal social protection policy advocacy. I’m looking for behind-the-scenes opportunities where I can use my frontline expertise to inform policy development—perhaps with think tanks, advocacy organizations, or government agencies working on social safety net programs. I want to be the voice that ensures policymakers understand how these systems actually work on the ground. Beyond: My goal is to become a trusted advisor on federal social protection policy, working behind the scenes to reform programs like SNAP, Medicaid, housing assistance, and other safety net systems. I want to help create policies that are informed by real-world experience rather than theoretical frameworks. My vision is to bridge the gap between direct service providers and federal policymakers, ensuring that the people who implement these programs daily have input into how they’re designed. I’m not interested in being a public-facing political figure—I want to be the person in the room when policy decisions are made, making sure someone who has actually navigated these systems for vulnerable populations is part of the conversation. |
